Clinics for Meet Director, Stroke and Turn Judge, and Starter
These jobs require a little bit of training, but all parents are eligible to participate. If you are fairly new to swimming, learning about these jobs now and shadowing some experienced officials will help our team in the future. You will never be asked to fill a position for which you do not feel comfortable or qualified.
Meet Directors oversee the meet and ensure equitable judging and scoring. They also record the order of finish in case of a discrepancy between Place Judges.
Stroke and Turn Judges work in pairs and ensure that all swimmers are competing legally. At the clinic, persons being trained for this position will watch a video of correct and incorrect stroke mechanics.
Starters introduce each event and heat and ensure that each swimmer has a legal start. Five Oaks uses a bullhorn to announce the start of each race.
The clinics will run with the following format: First 90 minutes for stroke and turn, then 30 minutes for starter, then 60 minutes for meet director. Meet directors must come to all 3 sessions (3 hours) of a clinic. If stroke and turn judges don't want to be a starter or a meet director, they may leave after 90 minutes.
